Another Red Day
US stock markets fell sharply today, with the Dow dropping over 970 points and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both declining more than 2%, as escalating trade tensions and political uncertainty rattled investors.
President Trump's renewed criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and aggressive trade rhetoric (including threats of further tariffs and accusations of unfair trade practices) added to market unease.
Technology and healthcare stocks led the decline, while NFLX 0.00%↑ Netflix was a rare bright spot, gaining on strong earnings. Meanwhile, gold surged above $3,400 an ounce as investors sought safe havens, and the US dollar hit a three year low amid concerns about economic policy stability.
Stay Focused
Temperament plays a crucial role in investing because it influences how an investor reacts to market fluctuations (i.e., today, the past several weeks, 2025 overall, etc.). Patience, discipline, and emotional control help investors stay committed to their strategy, while impulsiveness, fear, and overconfidence can lead to costly mistakes.
Successful investors resist short-term emotions, avoid panic during downturns, and focus on high-quality investments. Staying rational and sticking to a well-thought-out plan prevents reactive decisions that could harm long-term returns.
As I’ve emphasized in the past, major periods of market turbulence often give rise to attractive opportunities for long-term investors, as high-quality businesses can become temporarily mispriced or overlooked amid the noise.
