One of the counterintuitive aspects of cyclical investing is that the most attractive-looking financials often appear near the strongest part of the cycle. Peak earnings, strong margins, and low multiples can all reflect conditions that are difficult to sustain rather than evidence of enduring value. The challenge is less about valuing today's earnings than judging how representative they are of the cycle as a whole.
